Cognitive dissonance

Cognitive dissonance can sometimes be reduced by redefining your experience as interesting, removing conflicting data from our minds or changing our beliefs. In certain cases, it may be possible to rationalize our actions to decrease cognitive dissonance. One example is that we might justify smoking as a healthy activity. Stanford University conducted an experiment using social psychologists Leon Festinger (1959) and James M. Carlsmith (1960).
